Happy Diwali

Deepavali is a very significant festival for Hindus. Srila Prabhupada says: This ceremony was observed by the inhabitants of Ayodhya, the Kingdom of Lord Ramacandra. Lord Ramacandra was out of His Kingdom due to His 14 years banishment by the order of His father. The day on which Lord Ramacandra took back the charge again from His brother Bharata, and seated on the throne, is observed as Deepavali function.

The incident of Lord Krishna as a naughty child breaking the pot of yogurt and being bound by mother Yashoda took place on the Deepavali Day, or Deepa-malika. To give pleasure to His mother, Krishna, the Supreme Lord who cannot be captured even by great yogis, agreed to be bound by her. He also delivered two Gandharvas who were cursed to become trees in Vrindavan. Even today in India, this festival is generally celebrated very gorgeously in the month of Karthika by fireworks and lights.

The previous day of Deepavali is Naraka Chaturdashi. Krishna killed Narakasura and released the 16100 princesses kept captive by the demon. Narakasura is also known as Bhaumasura. He was the son of Bhoomidevi. But he became a demon due to bad association. He kidnapped many daughters of great kings and kept them imprisoned in his palace. To end his atrocities, Lord Krishna killed him by cutting off his head with the Sudarshana chakra.

The next day of Deepavali is Govardhana Puja celebrated to commemorate the pastime of Lord Sri Krishna lifting the Govardhana Hill to protect the residents of Vrindavana from the wrath of Indra. This festival is also known as Annakuta and is a very important festival for Gaudiya Vaishnavas. We invite you for Govardhana Puja Celebrations in ISKCON Bangalore on Monday, November 4, 2013.
